Does My Child Need A Baby Tooth Extraction?
A baby tooth extraction is necessary if your child is experiencing accelerated tooth decay, a bad injury to the tooth, or a baby tooth not falling out, and crowding adult teeth.
We only do baby tooth extraction if the tooth is beyond repair. If your kid does need a child tooth pulled, rest assured that we will make the experience as enjoyable as possible during their brave adventure!
What Happens During A Pediatric Tooth Extraction?
We get that baby tooth extractions can give you the willies, for kids and parents alike.
Our first priority is to make your child feel as calm and collected as possible. We use pediatric sedation to give your child the work they need without the scares! Different kids have different needs, so we will find the right sedation option for your little one.
During the extraction, the dentist will loosen the affected tooth using a tool called an “elevator”. Then, the tooth will be removed from the socket with forceps. That’s it!
What To Do After A Baby Tooth Extraction Procedure
After your child’s pediatric tooth extraction, it’s important to keep an eye on their healing process. Just after the procedure, it’s important to know that they might be acting a little silly. It’s totally normal for your little one to have lingering effects from the funny gas or funny juice.
- Avoid rinsing out the mouth for the first 24 hours so that a protective layer forms over your kid’s mouth boo-boo.
- After the initial 24 hour period, have your child gently rinse with salt water to reduce discomfort and keep the area as clean as possible.
- It’s also important to avoid drinking through straws or forceful spitting, which may dislodge protective layer formation.
Your child may be dealing with moderate irritation after the procedure, which can be easily managed with over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Ice packs applied to the outside of the jaw is also a great way to reduce swelling.
In the next few days following the baby tooth extraction, feed your child soft foods that are high in nutrients. Make sure they are also drinking plenty of water!
