Helpful Parent Tips

At Milestone Kids Dentistry, we know that being a parent comes with a lot of questions—especially when it comes to your child’s dental health.

We’re here to be your partner every step of the way, from first teeth to teen years. Whether it’s brushing struggles, picky snackers, or preparing for their first filling, we’ve got you covered.

Here are some of our favorite tips for parents to help make oral care easier, more fun, and more effective at home.

Brushing & Flossing Tips

  • Start early: Begin brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as they come in using a soft-bristled brush and a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use age-appropriate amounts: A pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is perfect for kids ages 3 and up.
  • Angle the brush: Teach kids to angle their toothbrush toward the gumline to clean effectively, and don’t forget those back molars!
  • Make it fun: Use timers, songs, or reward charts to keep brushing exciting. Let them pick out their toothbrush to boost motivation.
  • Floss once a day: Start flossing when teeth touch, and continue helping your child with flossing—many kids need help until age 10 or 11.

Dental Visit Prep

  • Stay positive: Talk about the dentist as a friendly helper, not a place to be afraid of. Avoid using words like “shot” or “hurt.”
  • Use kid-friendly language: We use fun terms like “sleepy juice” (anesthetic) and “tooth counter” (explorer) to make visits more approachable.
  • Practice at home: Play “dentist” with your child using a mirror and toothbrush to show what to expect.
  • Bring comfort: A favorite stuffed animal or toy can help your child feel more relaxed at their appointment.

Healthy Habits Start At Home

  • Snack smart: Offer fruits, veggies, cheese, yogurt, and other tooth-friendly snacks. Avoid sticky, sugary treats and juice as much as possible.
  • Stick to water: Encourage water between meals and before bed to rinse away food and strengthen enamel.
  • Avoid bedtime bottles with milk or juice: Stick to water only if your child still uses a bottle or sippy cup at night.

When Special Care Is Needed

  • Ask questions: Whether your child needs anesthesia, a frenectomy, or has sensory sensitivities, we’re happy to walk you through every step.
  • You’re not alone: We work closely with parents to ensure kids feel safe, supported, and seen. No judgment here—just teamwork.
